Each year the Eden Project hosts over 39,000 groups that have at least one member with a disability or long-standing illness.

According to the attractions’ Andy Bruton, who managed the installation, providing the right facilities allows groups or families with disabled people to visit the project, and stay for a full day.

“Accessibility is part of our ethos, but there are sound commercial reasons for installing a disabled suite for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

“Providing better facilities provides more marketing opportunities, which results in more people coming more often, and staying longer.”

The major differences between an accessible toilet and a disability suite are sufficient floor space (12sq m), and the right equipment – including an overhead hoisting system to help move people from a wheelchair to the toilet or changing table.

The Ergolet Luna system provides complete ‘in-room’ mobility, allowing a single carer to transfer a person to and from a wheelchair and around the room.

Although it covers all corners of the room, Ergolet’s Luna lifting unit can be positioned back to the wall when not in use, preserving the open space so the room is fully accessible for people in larger, motorised wheelchairs.

Bruton added: “The main learning for me is that the world is not designed for disabled people.

“Simple things like the height of a doorknob can make a room accessible, but going the extra mile and getting the best equipment makes a real difference to people’s lives.”

The Ergolet Luna overhead system is based on wall-mounted, load-bearing Etrack and a compact, portable Luna lifting unit, which can be used in any room where Etrack is fitted.

The tracking can be retro-fitted where there is no access to the room above, or in rooms with domed ceilings.

Initially founded in 1897, the attraction is now the official central museum for the country’s armed forces and has more than 10,500 exhibits on display dating back to the 14th century.

The museum is one of the largest across Germany, with around 20,000sq m (215,278sq ft) of exhibition space. The redesign is thought to have cost EUR62.5m (£54.7m, US$86.4m).

At the heart of the new-look museum is a five-storey wedge of glass, concrete and steel that “slices” through the centre of the original 135-year-old building.

The wedge has a 99ft (30.2m) viewing platform overlooking Dresden, with the tip marking the location where the first bombs of an Allied air raid fell on 13 February 1945.

Barbara Holzer said: “We show the contents of the exhibition as a walk-through installation in which objects become fascinating transmitters of history and grab the visitors emotionally.

“By exhibiting and combining the objects in an unconventional way we intend to irritate the viewer and thereby allow him to approach military history unprejudiced. As being part of cultural history it is also part of our life and personhood.”

Welsh environment minister John Griffiths said £1.2m would come through the Sustainable Development Fund to National Parks and £700,000 towards the country’s AONBs.

The fund aims to “engage” communities in sustainability projects and it is hoped that the investment will encourage the development of more schemes in the coming months.

Griffiths said: “These areas, along with our wider natural environment generally, are vital to the health and well being of people in Wales.

“They also make a significant contribution to the Welsh economy, contributing £8.8bn worth of goods and services each year and forming nine percent of Welsh GDP.”

CPO was established in 1993 in order to secure the future of the west London venue, which had come under threat and left the Premier League club at risk of being made homeless.

However, CFC now believes the “long-term commitment” of its owner Roman Abramovich means that any threat to Stamford Bridge no longer stands.

In its offer to CPO, the club will take on the freehold in return for “effectively” writing off a £10m loan made to CPO 14 years ago to assist in its purchase of the site.

It comes as CFC revealed that it is considering a move away from Stamford Bridge due to “major obstacles” to renovation and in order to generate higher levels of matchday income.

The CPO offer includes a commitment that CFC will not move before 2020 unless within 3 miles (4.8km) radius of its current home and meets a minimum capacity need of 55,000.

CFC chair Bruce Buck said: “We know only too well how close the club came to losing our home prior to the formation of CPO, but that threat has now gone under Mr Abramovich’s ownership and with the CPO structure in place we cannot plan with certainty for the future.”

Ron Gourlay, the club’s chief executive, added: “We continue to look at options for expanding the Bridge and I should be clear that we have not identified a site for a new stadium elsewhere.”

It is hoped that the purpose-built space will help Camperdown to continue its education and conservation programme, while a new retail area and indoor café has also been created.

An iconic, large wooden bear created by staff members in 2003 has been retained as part of landscaping work around the entrance area and is located on the venue’s approach path.

First opened to the public in February, the new entrance facility was officially opened on 22 April by television presenter Lorraine Kelly.
